On Oct 19th Darin Witkovic, a student member of SFPA will be presenting a talk on White Privilege. The aim of the talk is to 1) define and bring awareness to white privilege and 2) address the underlying reasons and ways of resistance when White people are confronted with their own racist attitudes.

An introduction will begin with a brief overview of Peggy McIntosh's seminal 1988 article, "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack." While many psychologists may be familiar with white privilege, it may be helpful to further unpack the psychological and intellectual processes that prevent White Americans awareness from their internal racist beliefs. Unwillingness to acknowledge racist transgressions and other defensive behaviors hindering empathic connections with people of color.

This is particularly important for clinicians. Citing from Pendler and Beverly's "The Racism Root Kit: Understanding the Insidiousness of White Privilege" the metaphor of a computer root program (apt for the Bay Area) is used to highlight offensive and defensive reactions when White people have difficulties recognizing their own racist behavior and thoughts. This discussion hopes to stimulate awareness, conversation, and positive change.
